This post is for my Pure Geography Students of 307. Congratulations to those who have done well for the test! Those who did not make it, don't give up! Take note of the careless mistakes as well as master the LORMs questions.

This is the sample of the LORMS question and answer that I went through during class before the projector broke down :

Discuss and evaluate the measures that may protect a stretch of coastline from erosion. [8]

Level 1 (0-3 marks)

  • General answers with no detail of measures
  • No example/s
  • No indication of success or general statement of success

Level 2 (4-6 marks)

  • Statements naming method but no/little detail
  • At least one example given- may not be linked to specific method
  • Brief attempt at indication of success

Level 3 (7-8 marks)

  • More than one method with detail, e.g. soft and hard engineering, at least two each with clarity.
  • Success of method must be specific and related directly to the method, e.g. "building a seawall is not a long term solution in areas of high wave energy. Erosion may weaken the seawalls over time..."
  • Clear statements of how measures used were successful in named area(s) and how measures used were less successful in named areas. Specific locations needed.
Evaluate the answer below and grade it. Let me know how much this answer deserves!

Some measures that can prevent a coastline from being eroded includes soft and hard engineering. An example of soft engineering includes growing mangroves on the coastline. Studies have shown that the vegetation will enable the sand and soil of the coastline to be bound together, preventing removal by waves. During periods of high wave activity, the coastline will suffer lesser damage as the mangroves act as a natural barrier. An example of hard engineering includes building sea walls along a coast. This method is to prevent erosion from the waves by using the seawall as a barrier.

However, hard engineering may not be effective in a few ways. Firstly, over time, the seawall gets eroded easily in areas of high wave energy. Secondly, economic costs are high to invest in a coastal protection measure that is not beneficial in the long run.

In my opinion, soft engineering is a better choice. As growing mangroves near the coastline is more cost effective compared to hard engineering. Also, soft engineering is more eco-friendly as it does not destroy or alter the natural environment.
