Due to the lack of time for revision, please practice this question and and I will go through the answers in class next week. Please pay particular attention to the use of terminologies and examples. Refer to the expectations below:

Question: Using a case study you have studied, describe and explain in detail the causes of deforestation. [8 marks]

Level 1 (0-3 marks)

  • No case study given
  • Neglect either description or explanation
  • Little use of technical terminology
  • Little depth and few relevant points

e.g. deforestation caused by logging.

Level 2 (4-6 marks)

  • Case study given
  • Both description and explanation of at least 3 points
  • Some appropriate use of technical terminology
  • Answers may have depth over a narrow area but may touch on many relevant points

e.g. “In Kalimantan, Indonesia, one cause of deforestation is due to commercial logging where trees are cut down and sold as timber. Kalimantan has suffered heavy logging in past 30 years and about 1656 square kilometres of forest logged away in west Kalimantan

Heavy logging is a result of the rapid pace at which wood is processed and exported and is made worse by illegal logging where logging companies log without a licence or logged more forested areas than it is allowed to.”

level 3 (7-8 marks)

  • Case study given
  • Both description and explanation of at least 4 points
  • Good use of technical terminology
  • Answers have some depth over a number of points

e.g. “In Kalimantan, Indonesia, growth of in settlement as led to overcrowding as population increases due to urbanization. More people are moving from rural areas to urban areas in search of better job opportunities. This has led to the expansion of town and cities and more forests are also cleared for housing. One example is the growth of Balikpapan city in east Kalimantan. This is one of the largest cities in Kalimantan with a current population of 400,000 as of 2005. Because of the rapid growth the city also expanded into the adjacent protected forests known as Sungei Wain Rainforest and despite being a protected forest, the size of the forest is still reduced by one third from 98.7 square km in 1997 to about 35 square km in 1998”
